Frequently asked questions

What are the 99 names of Allah?

They are the names by which Allah is known, called al-Asma’ al-Husna, “the best names.” The phrase comes from the Qur’an (7:180, Saheeh International): “And to Allāh belong the best names, so invoke Him by them.” Each name describes one of His attributes, such as ar-Rahman (the Entirely Merciful) or al-Alim (the All-Knowing).

Where does the number 99 come from?

From an authentic hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah: “Allah has ninety-nine Names, one-hundred less one; and he who memorized them all by heart will enter Paradise” (Sahih al-Bukhari 7392; also Sahih Muslim 2677).

Which hadith lists the 99 names?

The list most Muslims learn comes from Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 3507. At-Tirmidhi called that narration gharib (reported through a single chain), and sunnah.com grades it Da’if (Darussalam), so the number 99 is authentic while the exact list is the traditional one rather than a sahih text. Tirmidhi’s version counts “Allah” as the first name and does not include al-Ahad; the common list, used here, leaves out “Allah” and adds al-Ahad from Surah al-Ikhlas (112:1).

Are all 99 names mentioned in the Qur’an?

Not all of them word for word. On this page, 74 names appear in a verse as a name or description of Allah, and 20 appear through a verb from the same root, such as al-Qabid and al-Basit from “it is Allāh who withholds and grants abundance” (2:245). The other 5 (Al-Khafid, Al-Maajid, Al-Mani', Ar-Rashid and As-Sabur) are not used of Allah in the Qur’an and come from the hadith list.

What is the difference between ar-Rahman and ar-Rahim?

Both come from the root for mercy (r-h-m). The Saheeh International translation renders ar-Rahman as “the Entirely Merciful” and ar-Rahim as “the Especially Merciful,” and the two appear side by side in verses like 2:163 and 59:22, and in the opening of every surah but one.

How can I memorize the 99 names of Allah?

Learn them in small groups of five to ten, in order, and say each group aloud daily before adding the next. Use the “Test yourself” mode on this page to hide the meanings and check what you remember. Surah al-Hashr 59:22–24 holds more than a dozen of the names in three verses, so memorizing those verses carries many of the names with it.
