Virtues of learning & memorizing the Qur’an

The Prophet ﷺ promised abundant reward to those who give their lives to the Qur’an — learning it, teaching it, and carrying it in their hearts. Below is a curated collection of narrations on those virtues. Every hadith is graded hasan or higher, attributed to the companion who narrated it, and linked to its source on sunnah.com.

Study circles Sahih
No people gather in one of the houses of Allah, reciting the Book of Allah and studying it together, but that tranquility descends upon them, mercy envelops them, the angels surround them, and Allah mentions them to those who are with Him. excerpt
The reciter’s fragrance Sahih
The example of a believer who recites the Qur’an is like that of a citron which tastes good and smells good. And the believer who does not recite the Qur’an is like a date which is good in taste but has no smell. excerpt
Learn & act Hasan (Darussalam)
Learn the Qur’an, recite it and go to bed, for the likeness of the Qur’an and the one who learns it and acts upon it is that of a sack filled with musk whose fragrance spreads everywhere. excerpt
Reward per letter Hasan (Darussalam)
Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah receives a good deed for it, and the good deed is multiplied by ten. I do not say that Alif Lam Mim is a letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter, and Mim is a letter.
Worth more than wealth Sahih
Does not one of you go out in the morning to the mosque and learn or recite two verses from the Book of Allah? That is better for him than two she-camels; and three verses are better than three she-camels, and four verses are better than four she-camels, and so on. excerpt
Worthy envy Sahih
There is no envy except in two: a man whom Allah has given knowledge of the Qur’an and he recites it night and day, and a man whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it night and day.
The people of Allah Hasan (Darussalam)
Allah has His own people among mankind. They said: O Messenger of Allah, who are they? He said: They are the people of the Qur’an, the people of Allah and those closest to Him.
Recite to understand Sahih (Al-Albani)
He who finishes the recitation of the Qur’an in less than three days does not understand it. excerpt
Two rewards Sahih
The one who is proficient in the Qur’an will be with the noble and obedient scribal angels, and the one who recites the Qur’an and stumbles in it, finding it difficult, will have a double reward.
Recite and ascend Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani)
The one devoted to the Qur’an will be told: Recite and ascend, and recite carefully as you used to recite carefully in the world, for your rank will be at the last verse you recite.
Crowned with honor Hasan (Darussalam)
The one who memorized the Qur’an will come on the Day of Judgment, and the Qur’an will say: O Lord, adorn him. So he will be donned with a crown of nobility. Then it will say: O Lord, give him more. So he will be donned with a robe of nobility. Then it will say: O Lord, be pleased with him. So He will be pleased with him, and it will be said: Recite and rise, and with every verse you will be increased in reward.
An intercessor Sahih
Recite the Qur’an, for on the Day of Resurrection it will come as an intercessor for those who were devoted to it. Recite the two bright ones, al-Baqarah and Aal ʿImran, for on the Day of Resurrection they will come as two clouds shading those who recite them. excerpt
Raised to lead Hasan (Darussalam)
A young man was asked what he had memorized, and he said: I have memorized this and that, and Surat al-Baqarah. The Prophet ﷺ said: You have memorized Surat al-Baqarah? Then go, for you are their commander. excerpt
Honored in death Sahih
The Prophet ﷺ would join two of the martyrs of Uhud in one cloth, then ask: Which of them had more of the Qur’an? When one was pointed out, he would place him first in the grave, and said: I will be a witness over these on the Day of Resurrection. excerpt
Leads the prayer Sahih
The one who is most versed in the Book of Allah should lead the people in prayer. excerpt
Guard what you carry Sahih
The example of the one who knows the Qur’an by heart is like the owner of tied camels. If he keeps them tied, he will control them; but if he releases them, they will run away.
Protection from the Dajjal Sahih
If anyone learns by heart the first ten verses of the Surah al-Kahf, he will be protected from the Dajjal.
A surah that intercedes Hasan (Darussalam)
Indeed there is a Surah in the Qur’an of thirty Ayat, which intercedes for a man until he is forgiven. It is [Surah] Tabarak Alladhi Biyadihil-Mulk.
Keep it fresh Sahih
Keep on reciting the Qur’an, for it escapes from the hearts of men faster than camels break loose from their tethers. excerpt
Hold it fast Sahih
Commit yourselves to the Qur’an, for by Him in whose Hand is my soul, it is more prone to break away than a camel from its tether.

Frequently asked questions

What do sahih and hasan mean?

They are grades of authenticity. A sahih (sound) hadith has an unbroken chain of trustworthy narrators with precise memory, with no hidden defect or contradiction of stronger reports. A hasan (good) hadith meets the same conditions, except that one or more narrators’ precision is slightly lower. Both are accepted as evidence. “Hasan Sahih” is a combined grade used by at-Tirmidhi and some later scholars, and is at least as strong as hasan.

Who graded these hadith?

Narrations from Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim are accepted as sahih by consensus, so they carry no separate grade. For the Sunan collections (Abu Dawud, at-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah), each card shows the grade displayed on sunnah.com and whose grading it is, either Darussalam or al-Albani.

Why aren’t some well-known hadith about the Qur’an included?

Every narration here is graded hasan or higher. Some widely shared sayings about the Qur’an’s virtues are graded da’if (weak), such as the hadith comparing a person with no Qur’an in their heart to a ruined house (Jamiʻ at-Tirmidhi 2913), so they are left out rather than presented as reliable.

Is each quote the full hadith?

Not always. Where the saying about the Qur’an sits inside a longer narration, the card quotes that part and is marked as an excerpt. Every card links to the full hadith on sunnah.com.
