Frequently asked questions
How many surahs are in the Quran?
The Quran has 114 surahs (chapters), starting with Al-Fatihah and ending with An-Nas. Together they contain 6,236 verses in the standard count.
What is the longest surah in the Quran?
Al-Baqarah, surah 2, with 286 verses. It runs across parts of the first three juz.
What is the shortest surah in the Quran?
The shortest surahs have 3 verses each: Al-'Asr (103), Al-Kawthar (108) and An-Nasr (110). Al-Kawthar is the shortest of these by word count.
What is the difference between Meccan and Medinan surahs?
Meccan surahs were revealed before the Prophet ﷺ migrated from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE, and Medinan surahs were revealed after it. By the classification used here (the same as Quran.com), 86 surahs are Meccan and 28 are Medinan. Scholars differ on the classification of a few surahs.
Are the surahs in the order they were revealed?
No. The order in the mushaf is not chronological. After Al-Fatihah, surahs run roughly from longest to shortest, which is why most of the shortest surahs are gathered at the end, in Juz 30.
What is a juz?
A juz is one of 30 roughly equal reading portions of the Quran, about 20 pages each. Juz boundaries don’t follow surah boundaries, so a long surah can span several juz and one juz can hold many short surahs. The Juz column shows where each surah falls.
